மக்கள் கவிஞர் பட்டுக்கோட்டை கல்யாணசுந்தரம் - Part 1
Tamil Cinema had seen lot of poets/lyricists. Some of them were legends and shined like stars in the sky. Some stars shined very well. There was one star that looked very bright. That star was versatile touching all categories like devotion, social reform, labour development, love, philosophy, etc. MGR said that the fourth leg of his Chief Minister chair was created by the songs of that star while he did not know about other legs. That star only wrote 191 cinema songs but the fame and reputation that star got is equivalent to others who wrote thousands of songs. The star that I am talking about is none other than Pattukkottai Kalyana Sundharam.
Pattukkottai Kalyana Sundaram was born in 1930 to Arunacham and Visalakshi in Senkapaduthankadu village near Pattukkottai town. He got much inspiration to write songs by his elder brother Ganapathy Sundaram who also wrote Self-repect songs. During his teenage he started writing songs.
Pattukkottai Kalyana Sundaram (PKS) started acting in Sathi Nataga Sabha. When one of the drama was staged at Pondicherry he had a chance to meet Bharathidasan's son Mannar Mannan. In turn Mannar Mannan introduced PKS to Bharathidasan. During his stay at Pondicherry PKS used to meet Bharathidasan frequently and helped him in Kuyil magazine. PKS got oppotunity to meet some Tamil Cinema legends.
In 1954 when he was working for Jana Sakthi magazine, he wrote song under the title புதிய ஒளி வீசுது பார். This was PKS's first poem to be published in a magazine. He also got an opportunity to wrote songs for stage dramas. In the same year he got an offer to write for Cinema படித்த பெண். It was his first movie. However the production took long time and was rleased only in 1956. His second movie "Mageswari" got released in 1955. PKS slowly got famous among audiences.
PKS had high self-respect and objected if he found anything wrong no matter who the other person was. In 1956, he wrote songs for Pasavalai which was produced by TR Sundaram. The music was by MSV-TKR union. In a particular dancing song TRS forced PKS to write song with layman language which PKS objected. With the help of MSV-TKR , finally TRS convinced PKS to write that song. It was
"லொள் லொள் லொள்
மச்சான் உன்னை பார்த்து"
It became super hit song although PKS did not like that song. However it was said that PKS admired TRS for his commitment to make super hit songs/movies.
In an interview MSV recalled that when TRS's assistant came up with the song written by new comer, MSV asked him to choose Maruthakasi or Kannadasan and they did not have enough time to interact with new comers. However next day when the assistant showed the following song with that started with the following தொகையறா
குட்டியாடு தப்பி வந்தால்
குள்ளநரிக்குச் சொந்தம்
குள்ள நரி மாட்டி கிட்டா
கொறவனுக்குச் சொந்தம்
தட்டுகெட்ட மனிதர்கண்ணில்

MSV was very much impressed and cursed himself for ignoring a new comer.
PKS played pivotal role in writing influential songs for MGR films. It started with Chakravarthi Thirumagal (1957). He wrote பொறக்கும்போது - மனிதன் பொறக்கும்போது பொறந்த குணம் போக போக மாறுது and explained how people change their attitudes and the song was hit.
The highlight is Criticizing the innocent people who believe in anything and everything.

In Mahadevi (1957), PKS wrote
குறுக்கு வழியில் வாழ்வு தேடிடும் குருட்டு உலகமடா
இது கொள்ளை அடிப்பதில் வல்லமை காட்டும் திருட்டு உலகமடா
தம்பி தெரிந்து நடந்து, கொள்ளடா
இதயம் திருந்த மருந்து சொல்லடா
Another Question-answer song was
தாயத்து தாயத்து -
பலர் சந்தேகம் தீர்ந்துவிட சந்தோஷமான ஒரு
சங்கதியை சொல்ல வரும் தாயத்து -

There were such simplistic songs that made big impact on the original script of the film and MGR was very much impressed by PKS's writing skill. It is notable that at this time MGR was a growing hero and he never had any songs of these calibers in his films except one song from Malaikkallan.
When MGR produced and directed Nadodi Mananan (1958), PKS wrote four songs and there were two important songs. One of them was
சும்மா கிடந்த நிலத்தை கொத்தி; சோம்பல் இல்லாம ஏர் நடத்தி
in which PKS talked about the importance of having good agriculture. It was also a kind of question-answer song which also talked about the reasons on why farmers are not wealthy.

வந்திடக் காரணம் என்ன மச்சான்
அவன் தேடிய செல்வங்கள் வேற இடத்திலே
சேர்வதினால் வரும் தொல்லையடி

The last saranam starts with
நானே போடப்போறேன் சட்டம் பொதுவில்
நன்மை புரிந்திடும் திட்டம்
நாடு நலம் பெறும் திட்டம்
It was said that this song talked about what a good government should do for farmers.
Another gem was தூங்காதே தம்பி தூங்காதே in which he described why there is delay in the development and ends with.
As a gratitude, after sudden death of PKS at an young age, MGR made an arrangement that the royalty amount of Nadodi Mannan songs would go to family of PKS.
After becoming the Chief Minster of Tamil Nadu, in an interview, MGR said
"The fourth leg of my chief minister chair was created by the songs of Pattukkottai Kalyana sundaram. I do not know about other legs"

வாழ்வில் ஓர் திருநாள் - The beginning of Hero's introduction song
Tamil Cinema is mostly hero dominated. Hero does all kinds of magic that a comman fan/man imagines to do. When the hero does, common man thinks as if he does in his own. Hero fights with many people and win. Hero can lift a mountain too. Hero can literally do anything. In commercial films, one of the important factors is the scene in which the box office hero is introduced. One of the factors is the Hero's introduction song.
The first such mass introduction song scene for a Hero, in my opinion, is வாழ்வில் ஓர் திருநாள் for the hero M K Thiyagaraja Bagavathar from all time Super Hit movie Haridass which was released in 1944.
Immediately after the title, you see the legs of running horse and few seconds later, you see MKT with started singing

Then there are lot of young women roaming in the streets and MKT continues

A young woman winks at MKT and immediately he starts

Now MKT winks at other women and they go away with shy.
Another woman walks in front of the horse to see him despite oppose from his father. The song continues as

Now the girl tries to escape from him and runs ahead of the horse and song ends. You would be surprised to know who that girl was.
What a song it is. The lyrics by Papanasam Sivan, Song sequence and picturisation are way ahead of it's time. It is something that even in 1950s you won't see.
The horse that MKT rides in this song is his own horse. He used to participate in the race club with that horse. MKT owned latest cars, Bullet and an horse and he rode all of them in his own.
This song signals the mass introduction of the hero. Alas MKT went out of picture after the arrest. If not arrested, who knows the kind of level he would have gone.
The Legends of Tamil Cinema of 1930s and 1940s - Udumalai Narayana Kavi - PART 1
When Papanasam Sivan was dominating Tamil Cinema in 1930s with his excellent compositions mostly on devotional category there was another legend who excelled not only in devotional category but in social theme as well. He was Udumalai Narayana Kavi.
Udumalai Narayana Kavi (1899-1981) was one of Tamil cinema's earliest versatile lyricist who was active from 1930s to 1960s. Udumalai Narayana Kavi (UNK) was born in Poolavadi village near Udumalaipettai town. Due to poverty and loss of his parents he discontinued his study. He also took interest in play. He started acting in temple plays and eventually got connected with bigger drama groups.
UNK learnt music from songwriter "Udumalai Sarabam Muthusami Kavi". As as graditude he followed the same name style "Udumalai Narayana Kavi". He also learnt the art of Harikathakalaksebam from the famous person of that time.
He was interested in freedom movement and started writing many partiotric songs which were sung by famous personalities of that time. When Cinema started talking, he was introduced as Script writer and lyricst into the film "Krishna Leela" which was released in 1933. This followed other two films Draupadi Vastrapaharanam (1934) and Thooku Thooki (1935). He campaigned for Congress party in 1937 and wrote several nationalist songs independently and also wrote them in films.
He wrote the most popular songs which were well received by audience in PUC starred movie "Kannagi" (1942). All songs in this movie were so refreshing with excellent and simple lyrics. Then he gave another super hit "நடையாலங்காரம் கண்டேன் " in "Kubera Kuchela" film in which PUC acted and sang the song. This was considered as one of the best songs sung by PUC.
Another hit song was "செல்வமே சுக ஜீவாதாராம் திருமகள் அவதாரம்" sung by PUC. He continued to an important lyricist for PUC in the upcoming movies. He wrote all the songs for "Krishna Bakthi" which was released in 1949. PUC excelled as a singer in the movie singing many songs excellently written by UNK. PUC acted as Harikanandha Bhagavathar in the movie. UNK was specialist in writing songs in the genre of "Harikathakalaksebam" which he learnt even before he came to Cinema. This helped him to write "kathakalaksebam" fot this movie which PUC performed so well. It was said that PUC completed the entire sequcence of singing and delivering dialogues in a single shot which was a record at that time.
Songs like "எல்லோரும் நல்லவரே உலகினில் எல்லோரும் நல்லவரே", "சாரசம் வசீகர கண்கள் சீர்தரும் முகம் சந்திர பிம்பம்", "கலைமகள் தேவகுமாரி" , etc were very well received. Again he gave some super hits for PUC in 1951 Vanasundari movie like "என்னும் எழுத்ததும் இரு கண்ணாகும்". "கண்ணிலே விளையாடும்".
UNK played major role in PUC movies. In my opinion UNK was to PUC as to how Papanasam Sivan was to MKT. UNK-PUC and PS-MKT combo fantastically ruled the starting era of Tamil Cinema. Another notable thing is UNK's association with NSK. Post-release from jail, UNK was house-hold lyricist for NSK. NSK's first movie after released from jail was "பைத்தியக்காரன்" (1947) in which UNK wrote a song "ஜெயிலுக்குப் போய் வந்த" for NSK narrating the real life incident.
