MGR - The ultimate Box office hero
MGR (1917-1987) does not need an introduction. He was the popular hero for 3 decades and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for one decade.
MGR played only minor roles since his first movie "Sathi Leelavathi" which was released in 1936 in which he did an inspector role. The next movie "Iru Sagotharargal" which was released in the same year in which he again did Police role. MGR did minor roles till the arrival of 1947 "Raja Kumari" in which he did his first lead role as Hero. He did minor role as well as hero roles till 1950. There after he acted only as hero.
The second successful movie was "Manthiri Kumari" released in 1950 followed by Marmayogi in 1951. He did a good role in "En thangai" which ran for almost an year and highest ran movie for all of MGR movies.
The first Blockbuster movie "Malakkallan" was released in 1954 in which TMS sang "எத்தனை காலம்தான் ஏமாற்றுவார் இந்த நாட்டிலே" for MGR for the first time. MGR decied to keep TMS and insisted directors/producers to have one philosophical song in each of the movies. 1950s saw domination of MGR follwed by two more decaded in Cinema and one more decade in Polictics
Out of 31 years between 1947 and 1977, MGR's movies stood top in terms of box office collection for 25 years. This is something that you can not see anywhere. Cinema is seeing lot of legends and it had not seen a true box office hero like MGR.
Picture 1 : MGR touching the feet of M K Radha. One has to observe that at the time of taking the picture, M K Radha was forgotten hero whereas MGR was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
MKR helped a lot in MGR's initial career and as a gratitude, MGR touched his feet in a public function.Who on this earth would you find a person of MGR?
