AADAI KATTI VANDHA NILAVO - AMUTHAVALLI

Madhivanan Rama Chandran writes:

Pattukkottai Kalyana Sundaram (PKS) struggled a lot to get a chance in Cinema. NSK told him to leave chennai and go to his native place. PKS rejected his advise and immediately wrote this song

PKS wrote some fantastic love songs. One of them is It was said that PKS and his elder brother went to see the bride. His brother was not married at that time so PKS was thinking that they went to see the bride for his elder brother. However after coming to home, his brother told him they went to see bride for PKS. Then PKS wrote this song.

The above was used in அமுதவல்லி movie
Other notable song is

which he wrote in the movie

PKS summarised the life cycle of humans/other living beings in two lines
This was written for the movie
Some of the songs are very influential. People use few lines from his songs like proverb. Some of them are

The two other important songs he wrote for MGR are
from அரசிளங்குமரி movie and wrote very meaningful lyrics

In this song, he encouraged children to be strong in mind

In திருடாதே movie, he wrote

He insisted to learn and remember what you learn

In another song, he talked about some greedy people who always go with money and do not know what to do with it
வெளியிடப் பயந்து மறச்சு வைப்பான்;
ஆருக்கும் சொல்லாமப் பொதச்சு வைப்பான்;

As I said earlier, PKS was versatile he not only wrote on socialism and communism but also wrote few devotional songs like தில்லை அம்பல நடராஜா from சௌபாக்கியவாதி movie

Pattinathaar says "காயமே இது பொய்யடா வெறும் காற்றடைத்த பையடா"
PKS says "காயமே இது மெய்யடா அதில் கண்ணும் கருத்தும் வையடா"

His other notable film was Sridhar's Kalyana Parisu in which all songs became super hit and people always remember this song
Unfortunately PKS died too young when he was only 29.

Kannadasan wrote following after his death

Some interesting information about PKS

1 He studied only till 2nd/3rd grade but still able to write songs in pure Tamil like graduates
2 He was a martial artist as well and knew Silambam
3 Due to poverty, he did more than 15 jobs in short period of time
4 He was taller than most of the poets (6+ feets). Other tallest poet was Kannadasan

Pattukkottai Kalyana Sundaram was notable for the following

THOONGADHE THAMBI THOONGADHE - NADODI MANNAN

Madhivanan Rama Chandran writes :

Tamil Cinema had seen lot of poets/lyricists. Some of them were legends and shined like stars in the sky. Some stars shined very well. There was one star that looked very bright. That star was versatile touching all categories like devotion, social reform, labour development, love, philosophy, etc. MGR said that the fourth leg of his Chief Minister chair was created by the songs of that star while he did not know about other legs. That star only wrote 191 cinema songs but the fame and reputation that star got is equivalent to others who wrote thousands of songs. The star that I am talking about is none other than Pattukkottai Kalyana Sundharam.

Pattukkottai Kalyana Sundaram was born in 1930 to Arunacham and Visalakshi in Senkapaduthankadu village near Pattukkottai town. He got much inspiration to write songs by his elder brother Ganapathy Sundaram who also wrote Self-repect songs. During his teenage he started writing songs.
Pattukkottai Kalyana Sundaram (PKS) started acting in Sathi Nataga Sabha. When one of the drama was staged at Pondicherry he had a chance to meet Bharathidasan's son Mannar Mannan. In turn Mannar Mannan introduced PKS to Bharathidasan. During his stay at Pondicherry PKS used to meet Bharathidasan frequently and helped him in Kuyil magazine. PKS got oppotunity to meet some Tamil Cinema legends.
In 1954 when he was working for Jana Sakthi magazine, he wrote song under the title This was PKS's first poem to be published in a magazine. He also got an opportunity to wrote songs for stage dramas. In the same year he got an offer to write for Cinema படித்த பெண். It was his first movie. However the production took long time and was rleased only in 1956. His second movie "Mageswari" got released in 1955. PKS slowly got famous among audiences.
PKS had high self-respect and objected if he found anything wrong no matter who the other person was. In 1956, he wrote songs for Pasavalai which was produced by TR Sundaram. The music was by MSV-TKR union. In a particular dancing song TRS forced PKS to write song with layman language which PKS objected. With the help of MSV-TKR , finally TRS convinced PKS to write that song. It was
It became super hit song although PKS did not like that song. However it was said that PKS admired TRS for his commitment to make super hit songs/movies.
In an interview MSV recalled that when TRS's assistant came up with the song written by new comer, MSV asked him to choose Maruthakasi or Kannadasan and they did not have enough time to interact with new comers. However next day when the assistant showed the following song with that started with the following தொகையறா

MSV was very much impressed and cursed himself for ignoring a new comer.
PKS played pivotal role in writing influential songs for MGR films. It started with Chakravarthi Thirumagal (1957). He wrote பொறக்கும்போது - மனிதன் பொறக்கும்போது பொறந்த குணம் போக போக மாறுது and explained how people change their attitudes and the song was hit.
The highlight is Criticizing the innocent people who believe in anything and everything.
In Mahadevi (1957), PKS wrote
Another Question-answer song was
There were such simplistic songs that made big impact on the original script of the film and MGR was very much impressed by PKS's writing skill. It is notable that at this time MGR was a growing hero and he never had any songs of these calibers in his films except one song from Malaikkallan.
When MGR produced and directed Nadodi Mananan (1958), PKS wrote four songs and there were two important songs. One of them was
in which PKS talked about the importance of having good agriculture. It was also a kind of question-answer song which also talked about the reasons on why farmers are not wealthy.
The last saranam starts with
It was said that this song talked about what a good government should do for farmers.
Another gem was தூங்காதே தம்பி தூங்காதே in which he described why there is delay in the development and ends with.
As a gratitude, after sudden death of PKS at an young age, MGR made an arrangement that the royalty amount of Nadodi Mannan songs would go to family of PKS.
After becoming the Chief Minster of Tamil Nadu, in an interview, MGR said
"The fourth leg of my chief minister chair was created by the songs of Pattukkottai Kalyana sundaram. I do not know about other legs"

SUMMA KIDANDHA NILATHAI KOTHI - NADODI MANNAN

Madhivanan Rama Chandran writes:

MGR - The ultimate Box office hero

MGR (1917-1987) does not need an introduction. He was the popular hero for 3 decades and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for one decade.

MGR played only minor roles since his first movie "Sathi Leelavathi" which was released in 1936 in which he did an inspector role. The next movie "Iru Sagotharargal" which was released in the same year in which he again did Police role. MGR did minor roles till the arrival of 1947 "Raja Kumari" in which he did his first lead role as Hero. He did minor role as well as hero roles till 1950. There after he acted only as hero.

The second successful movie was "Manthiri Kumari" released in 1950 followed by Marmayogi in 1951. He did a good role in "En thangai" which ran for almost an year and highest ran movie for all of MGR movies.

The first Blockbuster movie "Malakkallan" was released in 1954 in which TMS sang "எத்தனை காலம்தான் ஏமாற்றுவார் இந்த நாட்டிலே" for MGR for the first time. MGR decied to keep TMS and insisted directors/producers to have one philosophical song in each of the movies. 1950s saw domination of MGR follwed by two more decaded in Cinema and one more decade in Polictics

Out of 31 years between 1947 and 1977, MGR's movies stood top in terms of box office collection for 25 years. This is something that you can not see anywhere. Cinema is seeing lot of legends and it had not seen a true box office hero like MGR.

Picture 1 : MGR touching the feet of M K Radha. One has to observe that at the time of taking the picture, M K Radha was forgotten hero whereas MGR was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
MKR helped a lot in MGR's initial career and as a gratitude, MGR touched his feet in a public function.

Who on this earth would you find a person of MGR?

He scrapped scenes shot at enormous cost and did them all over again if there was an error. Such was his penchant for perfection. A quality that made S. S. Vasan and his films legendary. RANDOR GUY pays a tribute to the movie mogul.

HE WAS hailed as `the Cecil B. de Mille of India.' Indeed he was the first Indian movie mogul. Spectacle, grandeur and opulence, he was the first filmmaker in this part of the world, to invest the celluloid with such qualities. Like some kind of rare physician he knew the esoteric art of feeling the pulse-beat of moviegoers and learnt the exclusive and evasive skills of quickening it. He also understood that whatever might be the purpose and the value of the medium, cinema was basically a vehicle of mass entertainment and not education or elevation.

Lavishness in production, splashing money in promoting, packaging and publicising a picture, he was a pioneer in Indian Cinema and had no equals, then, and now. `Be wise and advertise!' He had a character speak in his film "Miss. Malini" (1947), giving expression to one of his personal beliefs. And he showed what one could achieve with punch-plus publicity.

Writer, journalist, adman, magazine publisher, film distributor, studio-owner, filmmaker and producer — that was S. S. Vasan. He created film history establishing trends, and breaking box-office records in many languages. He and his Gemini Studio in Madras were household names and also part and parcel of the cultural scene of South India. The familiar Gemini Twins blowing the bugles (`When the bugles blow, there's a good show!' so ran the motto) was a stamp for quality, clean, wholesome, family entertainment and money's worth.

Vasan scrapped scenes shot at enormous cost and re-shot them all merely because somebody whatever be his age, status or qualification pointed out an error. During the making of "Bahut Din Huye"(a Hindi remake of the early Telugu Gemini box-office bonanza, "Balanagamma''), a huge expensive set had been erected and scenes between the villain, a lustful magician and the chaste heroine were being filmed. A boy working on the set pointed out an error, which he told his pal and was overheard by Vasan! A vital point that went against the character of the heroine! Vasan felt that the lowly boy was right and without batting an eyelid he packed up the shooting and ordered the entire footage to be scrapped. That was not all. He told his creative men to re-do the script in the light of the boy's remark and shot it all once again. That was Vasan!

He was making a Tamil film built around capital-labour relations. The film had no title yet and was being referred as `Gemini Production Number So-and-So.' The crowded Gemini creative team could not think of a title acceptable to the `Boss'. Finally Vasan invited his employees to suggest a title for the under-production movie. An avalanche of entries poured! One office-boy sent in as many as 2,500 titles written down in a notebook! Vasan read them all and one suggestion, ``Irumbu Thirai" (Iron Curtain, 1960) met with his nod in the listed 2,500 entries! The boy was handsomely rewarded by the `Boss,' who also hosted a reception in his honour! That was Vasan.

His films — ``Chandralekha" (1948, Tamil and Hindi, director, Vasan), ``Mangamma Sabatham" (1943, Tamil, director, Acharya), ``Apoorva Sahotharargal" (1949, Tamil, Acharya), "Miss Malini" (1947, Tamil, Kothamangalam Subbu), "Avvaiyar" (1953, Subbu), "Vanjikottai Valiban," (1958, Tamil, Vasan), ``Paigham" (1959, Hindi, Vasan), ``Gunghat" (1960, Ramanand Sagar), ``Gharana" (1958, Vasan), ``Grihasthi" (1964, Kishore Sahu) and others, — have left behind indelible footprints on the sands of Indian Cinema.

"Chandralekha," Vasan's first directorial venture after being producer for seven successful years is considered to be his finest work. Though many have contributed to the exuding excellence of the picture, it was Vasan who gave it the shine, sheen, shape and final form. With this film he created history at many levels and many ways. The most important of them all was his trail-blazing success in taking Hindi films made in South India to the rest of the sprawling nation. Vasan was the first South Indian filmmaker to break the fort walls of Hindi cinema and this is one of the most significant achievements of his life. Indeed he was the man who put Madras on the movie map of India.

Thiruthuraipoondi Subramania Srinivasan (alias S. S. Vasan) was born on March 10, 1903, and hailed from the culture-rich Thanjavur district and was born into a Brahmin family of very modest means. And to add to the misery of poverty his father died when Vasan was merely two years old. The lot of a Brahmin widow in the early years of the century in a small-town steeped in old-world orthodoxy, autocratic Brahminism, with its cruel rituals, was nothing short of hell on earth. But Balambal, Vasan's mother, was no ordinary woman. She was highly literate though she had undergone no schooling in accordance with the customs and social mores of the times. She was well versed in Sanskrit and Tamil classics, epics and religious lore. She instilled in her growing son a lasting love for literature, learning, and ancient Indian culture. Dreaming of a secure future, she and her son migrated to Madras. Like Dick Whittington's London the roads of Madras were not exactly paved with gold. Indeed life in the city was hard, harsh, often harrowing and the worried mother suffered misery to educate her only offspring.

(While the official records, magazines and others mention the date of Vasan's birth as March 10,1903, according to the family he was actually born on January 4, 1904! During that period many families had `advanced' the data of birth to help in school admission it was entered in the `SSLC' (Secondary School Leaving Certificate) book. So for all practical purposes it remained the official date of birth! Obviously it had happened for Vasan too!)
Vasan's mother wished her son should get a B.A. degree, the hallmark of the intellectual Brahmin community in those days. It was also a passport to land a safe and secure 10 a.m.-5 p.m. desk job in any British Indian Government department, or an equally dependable European firm. However lack of resources prevented Vasan from graduating.

He realised the difficulties his mother had to undergo to educate him and he decided to enter the turbulent ocean of life and find a way to make a living. Innovative, enterprising and daring he chose a new activity — selling space. He secured advertisements for Madras-based publications and earned commission on the ad revenue he could generate. Indeed a precarious way of making one's living especially when publications were not many. However Vasan became a one-man ad agency. With his flair for writing he offered his copy to the few Tamil publications then in existence for which he also canvassed for ads. To get business he travelled widely.

Meanwhile, a relative who was working in the Madras and Southern Maratta Railway, offered to get Vasan a job. But a cash-security deposit had to be given which the family did not possess! Vasan had written a novel, which a kind publisher offered to take and give him the necessary cash. But the publisher failed to keep his promise, and out went the opportunity of Vasan working in the railways as a pen-pushing clerk!

Later in his life, in the silent hours of still nights, Vasan wondered how his life would have unfolded if he had got that job! Besides his ad business, Vasan carried another line of activity, equally novel for the day, Mail Order business.
He did fairly well and wished he could have a publication of his own. Soon he purchased a shaky humour-based monthly for Rs. 200 (Rs. 25 for each alphabet of its name!).

Working hard he built it up into a weekly and soon the weekly scaled to the top and the best selling Tamil magazine Ananda Vikatan is still running successfully after nearly eighty years.

That was not all. Vasan, with his penchant for taking risks, developed an interest in horse racing and soon he was a successful punter. Ere long he was flushed with funds and entered the world of movies as distributor-financier promoting his successful company `Gemini Pictures Circuit.' From distribution to production it was but a short leap ahead and in 1941 he bought a studio in the heart of the city on Mount Road, Madras, in `court auction' and he re-named it Gemini Studio. Thus it began, and rest, as the saying goes, is history...!

Since 1941 until September 1969 when he passed away, Vasan enjoyed a uniquely successful innings in Indian Cinema earning a permanent seat in its Hall of Fame.

His phenomenal success in Hindi Cinema is almost unparalleled to this day even though more than three decades have rolled over the horizon since his exit for the yonder blue...
