The Legends of Tamil Cinema of 1930s and 1940s - N S Krishnan

N S Krishnan (1908-1957) was one of the most reputed personalities of Tamil cinema not only in his living time but till date as well. He was a comedian, singer, producer and director. Like other celebrities, he stopped at 4th grade at School due to poverty. He was basically a Villu paatu artist telling stories with songs and catcy narration. Later he joined drama troupe and acted in stage plays. He started his own stage group and acted in many stage plays.

He got opportunities in Cinema. His first movie was Menaka released in 1935 although officially he accepted the first offer for Sathi Leelavathi. Due to some legal issues, Sathi Leelavathi was released in 1936. Menaka was the first movie based on social theme. All the movies released before Menaka were based on mythological background. NSK played nice comedy role and became famous. He was also a kind of villain in the movie. This followed Sathi Leelavathi (1936), Vasantha Sena (1936), Ambikapathy (1937), etc He played a good comedy roles in all these films. Ambikapthy was the only movie in which there was no scene of meeting NSK with T A Maduram although both of them were part of a movie.

At one point of time, he seemed to be the only shining comedian as he got lot of offers in 1940s. He had unique style in his comedy scenes. Mostly his appearance would be independent of the main plot of the movie. He had his own group of people to act along with him and he mostly wrote dialogues and directed his comedy scenes. This is something unique in film industry. In 1940 released Alibabavum 40 Thirudarkalum movie, NSK and TAM played the lead role but the film was a commercial failure.

ARREST, DOWN and UP
When NSK and MKT were at the peak of their career, in 1944 they were arrested in connection with Lakhmikanthan murder case. Both of them were kept at the same cell. After their second successful appeal they were acquitted from the case. Both of them lost their wealth and health. NSK almost lost everything that he earned when fighting against the case. His wife T A Madhuram, started drama troupe named N S K Nataka sabha and staged dramas written and acted by S V Sahasranamam. 

She used the money earned to fight against the case. She started a movie project named Paithiyakkaaran. When the movie was under production NSK was acquitted and the story was changed to include him. TAM played dual role. MGR played a supporting role. The movie was successful and NSK returned to fame again. His popularity in fact went up after released from jail.

(On the other side it was pathetic to see MKT going down and eventually out of cinema and popularity after all of his movies failed in the box office)

He was attracted towards DMK and become the admirer of Anna and Periyar. In his subsequent movies he conveyed the thoughts of DMK party thru the songs and dialogues. Anna wrote Nallathambi in which NSK palyed the lead role. Udumalai Narayana Kavi wrote some excellent songs like நாட்டுக்கு சேவை செய்ய நாகரீக கோமாளி வந்தேனய்யா and கிந்தனார் காலட்சேபம் which were received well by the audience. This followed Manamagal in 1951 and Panam in 1952 and both of these were directed by NSK and written by M Karunanidhi. These movies talked high on the social reforms.

S V Sahasranam, and Subbu Arumugam were responsible for script writing and Udumalai Narayanakavi was responsible for song writing for his comedies. NSK is considered as the Charlie Chaplin of India as there are many similarities between them both in reel life and real life. NSK is fondly called as "Kalaivaanar"

NSK did many achievements which were first of the kind. NSK is the
1 first actor to complete 100 films
2 first actor to act with real life pair T A Maduram for maximum number of movies
3 first comedian who had "short scenes" already filmed with separate troupe and sold them to producers to include them in the upcoming movies
4 first comedian whose "short scenes" were included in few movies after they failed at the box office to boost up the collection
5 first comedian who became a producer, writer and director as well
6 first actor who was given complete freedom by director and producer to choose comedy track and songs in the way he wanted.
7 first comedian to convey messages on superstition and social/political reforms thru the songs

It was said that when he died in 1957 large number of people visited to pay the last tribute. Tamil Cinema produced lot of comedians but no one reached the fame and versatility that NSK had.
